June 9/10

The Sound of Freedom

In the 19th century, many people from Baden emigrated from their homeland to the USA - also to Wisconsin in the area of today's sister cty Madison. One reason was the mass poverty in Baden Often emigrants from the old homeland could only take their familiar songs full of longing and hope with them.

A second group of emigrants were "Forty-Eighters" - participants of the Baden Revolution of 1848/49 - who wanted to establish a German republic. Persecuted as "high traitors" after their failure many fled to the USA. There they had to start a new and often insecure life as immigrants.

Both groups are in the focus of the performance.

- Students of the macromedia university have transformed the song lyrics of the emigrants into contemporary forms - from rock to rap and ballads

- and the students of the advanced history course at the Berthold-Gymnasium have evaluated the collection of letters of the Freiburg revolutionary Andreas Rübelmann, who died exactly 120 years ago in the USA as a rich farmer. They transformed those letters into biographical scenes. This "Andrew Rubelman" still had correspondence with his family in Denzlingen for almost 70 years. By a lucky coincidence, the City Archive in Freiburg came into possession of this valuable collection and made it available to us.

 - As the third participant in the project, the Berthold-Gymnasium's "Fine Arts" course establishes a link to immigrants to Freiburg today - a colorful city with a 900-year anniversary: "New Freiburgers" will be visible in words and pictures before and during the performance in artistic portraits and will visually connect with the "old" Baden emigrants such as Carl Schurz, Friedrich Hecker, Carl von Rotteck junior and Andreas Rübelmann

Première at the Wodan Hall, Leo-Wohleb-Straße 4, at 8 p.m.
More performances on June 10 at 5 and 8 p.m
