John Jacobis Ehrung
Der Stadrat unserer Partnerstadt Madison ehrte am letzten Dienstag, dem 17. April 2012, den langjährigen Vorsitzenden des Sister City Committees John Jacobi für seine Verdienste um die Städtepartnerschaft mit Freiburg. Wir von der Freiburg-Madison-Gesellschaft gratulieren ihm recht herzlich, zumal wir seine aufopfernde Pflege unserer Städtepartnerschaft häufig erleben durften.
Das Bild zeigt John vor einem Jahr am Sonntag, den 6. März 2011, am Informationsstand in Madisons Overture Center zusammen mit seiner Frau Marge, der, wie ich finde, wenigstens die gleiche Ehre gebührte. Auf dem Tisch für die Besucher ausgebreitet liegt Informationsmaterial über Freiburg. Anlässlich meines Vortrags im Max-Kade_Institut in Madison weilend habe ich versucht, Marge und John (später auch Eric und Peter Lewandowski) ein wenig am Stand zu helfen und dabei dieses Photo aufgenommen. Traditional Hiking Tour with the FMG, the Circle of Business Juniors

This year's traditionally hiking tour through the vineyards on May 1, 2012, started at 11 a.m. at Oberrottweil in the Kaiserstuhl. We went up to the Mondhalde from where we had a fantastic view over the Rhine valley into neighbouring France. Later we were due at Trautwein's for food and drink.

Walkers Abwahl gescheitert
Mit 58 zu 42 % der abgegebenen Stimmen hat der republikanische Gouverneur von Wisconsin Scott Walker am 5. Juni 2012 seine Abwahl verhindert und seinen demokratischen Herausforderer den Bürgermeister von Milwaukee Tom Barret klar geschlagen.
Vor gut einem Jahr konnte ich die Proteste im Madison rund ums Capitol gegen die Sparpolitik Walkers miterleben, der vor allem Sozialleistungen kürzte und das Tarifverhandlungsrecht der Gewerkschaften einschränkte. Nachdem am Abend feststand, dass seinen Abwahl gescheitert war, sagte Walker: Wir rufen Wisconsin, unserem Land und allen Völkern der Erde zu, dass Wähler Führer wollen, die aufstehen und harte Entscheidungen treffen.
Politische Auguren sehen, zumal Clinton und Obama den demokratischen Herausforderer Barrent im Wahlkampf massiv unterstützt hatten, in Wisconsin bereits einen Pendelstaat (swing state), in dem bei der kommenden Präsidentenwahl ein Teil der traditionell demokratischen Wählerschaft ins Lager der Republikaner wechselt. Die nationale Presse, d. h., New York Times, Washington Post und Time haben deshalb dem Sieg Walkers einen breiten Raum eingeräumt. Walkers Triumph gibt seinen Anhängern neuen Mut, bedeutet eine Teilunterstützung für Mitt Romney und ist eine bittere Enttäuschung für die fortschrittlichen Kräfte in Wisconsin sowie die Gewerkschaften.

Was bei uns in Freiburg vor einiger Zeit für Stürme im lokalen Blätterwald sorgte, wird nun auch in Madison zur Last. Mayor Soglin hat der nicht genehmigten Reklame auf Madisons Bürgersteigen den Kampf angesagt. Ein Nebenkriegs-schauplatz? Urteilen Sie selbst.

4th of July Party

Let’s meet at the Ganter Brauerei-Biergarten on Saturday, July 7, for our yearly 4th of July Party! For this year’s celebration of the 236th Independence Day we will come together with friends from around the globe. Our guest of honor Consul Jeffrey Hill, the new head of the cultural department of the US-Consulate in Frankfurt, will welcome all participants at 5 p.m. Let’s fire up the grill, have some drinks and enjoy live music with the “Tootles” and other special guests of the Zeltmusikfestival. There will be activities for kids and adults alike and the Cha Cha Slide will get everyone groovin’!

Unsere Freunde aus Madison bei einem echt "deutschen" Stammtisch im Biergarten der Capital Brewery (Juli 2012).

Singing in Madison
Mit der Betreung der Mädchenkantorei des Freiburger Münsters während ihrer Amerikareise hat sich das Sister City Committee in Madison um die Partnerschaft unserer Städte verdient gemacht. Hier folgt die offizielle Einladung zum Konzert, in der das Madison-Freiburg Sister City Committee auch auf die Geschichte der Partnerschaft eingeht:
FREIBURG CATHEDRAL GIRLS’ CHOIRTO PERFORM FREE CONCERT IN OVERTURE HALLMADISON Wednesday August 8 at 7:30 pm
Accompanied by Marjorie Frances Mayo on the Madison Symphony Orchestra’s Overture Concert Organ (German-built by Orgelbau Klais of Bonn), the program will be a diverse showcase of classic choral works by Mendelssohn, Brahms, and Purcell along with contemporary composers such as John Rutter, Arvo Pärt, Javier Busto, Thomas Jennefelt, Waldemar Åhlen, and others. Several movements from the organ symphonies of Charles- Marie Widor will be interspersed.
The Freiburg Cathedral Girls’ Choir was founded in 1973 and has been an integral part of music at the Cathedral ever since, performing at regular and holiday services throughout the church year. Under the direction of Martina van Lengerich from 2003, the Choir has made many European and international tours, television and radio appearances, and CD recordings. It has also won the 8th German Choir Competition in the “Children’s Choirs 13 years and under category" and sang for the visit of Pope Benedict XVI to Freiburg. It is regarded as among the best girls’ choirs in Europe.
This tour is an excellent opportunity for these 42 young singers, aged 11-19, to act as musical ambassadors for Freiburg, extend the cultural exchange by staying with local families, learn about American life from personal relationships by staying with local families.
This concert will conclude the Choir’s 2012 U.S. Tour, which includes performances at St. Peter’s Catholic Church and St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City on July 29 and 31, at St. Agnes’ Cathedral in Rockville Centre, NY, on August 1, United Church in Washington D.C. on August 3, and St. Ita Catholic Church in Chicago on August 6.
From the Madison-Freiburg Sister City Committee: The beginnings of the Madison sister city relationship with Freiburg, Germany date to 1964, when the University of Wisconsin-Madison first sent students to enjoy the hospitality of Freiburgers. thes students took advantage of academic programs at the renowned Albert-Ludwigs University of Freiburg, established in 1457. Formal relations involving the two municipalities began in 1984 when leaders in both cities undertook to explore ways of expanding the relationship. As a result, the Madison Common Council passed a resolution establishing the Madison-Freiburg Sister City Committee in December 1985. The following year, Lord Mayer Rolf Boehme of Freiburg visited Madison, and Mayor Joe Sensenbrenner returned the visit in 1987 to draw a formal agreement. Delegations from both cities exchanged visits in 1988 to sign the agreement.
Since then, information and communications ties, cultural exchange activities, and business, professional and social contacts have become well-established features of relations between the two cities, with Madisonians visiting and providing homestays for visitors from Freiburg and vice versa. These relations have enabled many individuals and groups to conduct research, engage in apprenticeships, conduct commercial activities, participate in youth exchanges, and pursue other goodwill interactions on many levels. The visit of the Freiburg Cathedral Girls’ Choir represents the most recent and one of the most notable examples of international and local cooperation undertaken for the mutual benefit of the citizens of Freiburg and Madison.

Nachlese zum Auftritt der Freiburger Mädchenkantorei in Madison
In ihrer Samstagsausgabe vom 29. September 2012 hat die BZ auf Seite 24 unter Sonst noch was lediglich folgende Notiz veröffentlicht:
BEJUBELT: Die Partnerschaft zwischen Freiburg und dem amerikanischen Madison funktioniert. Davon konnten sich auch die 41 jungen Sängerinnen der Mädchenkantorei überzeugen, die bei einer Konzertreise in den USA bei Gastfamilien untergebracht waren. Besonders die Freiburg-Madison-Gesellschaft war immer zur Stelle, wenn etwas gebraucht wurde. Dafür gaben die Mädchen in der "Overture Hall" vor 1500 Zuschauern ein bejubeltes Konzert.
Doch Ehre, wem Ehre gebührt. Deshalb folgende Korrektur als Leserbrief an die BZ:
In der BZ vom 24.September 2012 erwähnen Sie unter „Sonst noch was" den großartigen Erfolg der Freiburger Mädchenkantorei unter der Leitung von Martina van Lengerich bei ihrem Auftritt in der „Overture Hall“ in Freiburgs Partnerstadt Madison, Wisconsin. Vor Ort in Madison war das „Freiburg Sister City Committee" besonders um die jungen Sängerinnen bemüht und hat sich um die Partnerschaft der beiden Städte verdient gemacht. Die „Freiburg Madison Gesellschaft" hier am Ort, hat sich um die Anknüpfung der Kontakte nach drüben gekümmert. Historic Places in Freiburg

The traditional guided tour for the American students of the Academic Year in Freiburg (AYF) 2012/2013 started at the Bertold Schwarz fountain at the Rathausplatz at 2 p.m. on 12 September. It ended with a visit of the Münster church.

Reception for the Students of the Academic Year in Freiburg 2011/2012
at the Greiffenegg-Schlössle at 6 p.m.
We had some showers in the late afternoon, so exceptionally, the reception was not at the terrace but inside the Greiffenegg-Schlössle built by Hermann von Greiffenegg in 1805 as his old-age residence. Greiffenegg's son Hermann Gottlob von Greiffenegg lived in the Schlössle until 1833. The building was later used as a restaurant.

Freiburg's Carl-Schurz-Haus turned 60 in 2012
The anniversary celebration with invited guests took place in the Assembly Hall of the University of Freiburg on Thursday, October 18, 2012, at 7 p.m.
The Dean the University of Freiburg His Magnificence Professor Dr. Jochen Schiewer welcomed the guests at his premises and underlined the many existing links between Freiburg’s university and universities in the States.
State Minister for Cultural Affairs Silke Krebs transmitted the congratulations of Baden-Württemberg’s government.
US Consul General Kevin C. Milas emphasized the good relations between Germany and the United States nourished by the devoted work of the Carl-Schurz-Haus.

personal recollections with the US

Präsident Obama in Madison
Madison police are preparing for a second visit by President Barack Obama in just over a month, and the Monday visit will include an appearance by rocker Bruce Springsteen, the Associated Press reported.
Spokesman Joel DeSpain said police are working with the Secret Service on a security plan for a rally by Obama on Monday, the day before the presidential election.
Past presidential visits have involved several hundred officers from Madison and other area law enforcement agencies, DeSpain said. The Obama campaign confirmed Monday’s visit but did not release any further details.
Barack Obama's election-eve campaign rally in Madison featuring rock icon Bruce Springsteen will take place Monday morning on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in front of the City-County Building.
The event, lasting from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. with Springsteen and the president appearing between 10 and 11 a.m., will close Capitol Square and several other Downtown blocks to traffic starting at 11 a.m. Sunday.
Martin Luther King Boulevard will be closed to vehicles beginning at 8 a.m. Sunday, and adjacent streets will be closed at 11 a.m. Sunday. The rally's general admission entrance will be at West Mifflin Street and State Street. Doors will open Monday at 7 a.m.
An accessible entrance will be located at East Doty and South Pinckney streets.

An important announcement regarding the USA
To the citizens of the United States of America
In light of your immediate failure to financially manage yourselves and also in recent years your tendency to elect incompetent Presidents of the USA and therefore not able to govern yourselves, we hereby give notice of the revocation of your independence, effective immediately. (You should look up 'revocation' in the Oxford English Dictionary.)
Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchical duties over all states, commonwealths, and territories (except Kansas, which she does not fancy). Your new Prime Minister, David Cameron, will appoint a Governor for America without the need for further elections.
Congress and the Senate will be disbanded. A questionnaire may be circulated sometime next year to determine whether any of you noticed. To aid in the transition to a British Crown dependency, the following rules are introduced with immediate effect:
1. The letter 'U' will be reinstated in words such as 'colour,' 'favour,' 'labour' and 'neighbour.' Likewise, you will learn to spell 'doughnut' without skipping half the letters, and the suffix '-ize' will be replaced by the suffix '-ise.' Generally, you will be expected to raise your vocabulary to acceptable levels. (look up 'vocabulary').
2. Using the same twenty-seven words interspersed with filler noises such as ''like' and 'you know' is an unacceptable and inefficient form of communication. There is no such thing as U.S. English. We will let Microsoft know on your behalf. The Microsoft spell-checker will be adjusted to take into account the reinstated letter 'u'' and the elimination of '-ize.'
3. July 4th will no longer be celebrated as a holiday.
4. You will learn to resolve personal issues without using guns, lawyers, or therapists. The fact that you need so many lawyers and therapists shows that you're not quite ready to be independent. Guns should only be used for shooting grouse. If you can't sort things out without suing someone or speaking to a therapist, then you're not ready to shoot grouse.
5. Therefore, you will no longer be allowed to own or carry anything more dangerous than a vegetable peeler. Although a permit will be required if you wish to carry a vegetable peeler in public.
6. All intersections will be replaced with roundabouts, and you will start driving on the left side with immediate effect. At the same time, you will go metric with immediate effect and without the benefit of conversion tables. Both roundabouts and metrication will help you understand the British sense of humour.
7. The former USA will adopt UK prices on petrol (which you have been calling gasoline) of roughly $10/US gallon. Get used to it.
8. You will learn to make real chips. Those things you call French fries are not real chips, and those things you insist on calling potato chips are properly called crisps. Real chips are thick cut, fried in animal fat, and dressed not with catsup but with vinegar.
9. The cold, tasteless stuff you insist on calling beer is not actually beer at all. Henceforth, only proper British Bitter will be referred to as beer, and European brews of known and accepted provenance will be referred to as Lager. New Zealand beer is also acceptable, as New Zealand is pound for pound the greatest sporting nation on earth and it can only be due to the beer. They are also part of the British Commonwealth - see what it did for them. American brands will be referred to as Near-Frozen Gnat's Urine, so that all can be sold without risk of further confusion.
10. Hollywood will be required occasionally to cast English actors as good guys. Hollywood will also be required to cast English actors to play English characters. Watching Andie Macdowell attempt English dialogue in Four Weddings and a Funeral was an experience akin to having one's ears removed with a cheese grater.
11. You will cease playing American football. There are only two kinds of proper football; one you call soccer, and rugby (dominated by the New Zealanders). Those of you brave enough will, in time, be allowed to play rugby (which has some similarities to American football, but does not involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full kevlar body armour like a bunch of nancies).
12. Further, you will stop playing baseball. It is not reasonable to host an event called the World Series for a game which is not played outside of America. Since only 2.1% of you are aware there is a world beyond your borders, your error is understandable. You will learn cricket, and we will let you face the Australians (World dominators) first to take the sting out of their deliveries.
13. You must tell us who killed JFK. It's been driving us mad.
14. An internal revenue agent (i.e. tax collector) from Her Majesty's Government will be with you shortly to ensure the acquisition of all monies due (backdated to 1776).
15. Daily Tea Time begins promptly at 4 p.m. with proper cups, with saucers, and never mugs, with high quality biscuits (cookies) and cakes; plus strawberries (with cream) when in season. God Save the Queen!

This year, MFG's traditional Christmas Dinner fell on Saint Nicholas Eve (December 5). Traditionally Sankt Nikolaus, in company of Knecht Ruprecht, hands out Apples (sorry apples), nuts, and sweets to children who had behaved well throughout the previous year.
You may read more about this German tradition on Wikipedia, for our man of the evening was George von Savigny, who had taken along one of his more than one hundred guitars. Before he struck up, he told us not to confuse Santa Claus mit dem deutschen Heiligen Nikolaus.
After having well-received this lesson, George invited us to sing along. With the help of texts he had graciously prepared, we sang traditional American and German Christmas songs.
